Twisting Ladders pattern

My first published pattern: The Twisting Ladders Hat!

The Twisting Ladders Hat.

Materials:
Approximately 100 yards worsted weight yarn. Shown here in Cascade 220.
Size 8 US 16" circular needle, and size 8 set of 4 or 5 dpns. (or whatever size gives you gauge)
Tapestry needle for sewing in ends

Gauge: 4 sts and 6 rows/inch in the stockinette portions. Row gauge isn't that important, though.

Border:
Cast on 71 stitches in whichever method you prefer. I used long-tail.
Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist.
Row 1: (k1,p1) to last st, k1.
Row 2: (p1,k1) to last st, p1.

Rep. these two rows four more times, or until desired border length (hat as shown has 6 rows in border--I have a short head).

Next row: K2tog, k around. 70 stitches remaining.

Lace pattern:
Row 1: (k5, k2tog, yo, p5, k2tog, yo). Repeat three times more.
Row 2: Knit even.
Row 3: (k4, k2tog, yo, k1). Repeat six times more.
Row 4: Knit even.
Row 5. (k3, k2tog, yo, k2). Repeat six times more.
Row 6: Knit even.
Row 7: (k2, k2tog, yo, k3). Repeat six times more.
Row 8: Knit even.
Row 9: (k1, k2tog, yo, k4). Repeat six times more.
Row 10: Knit even.
Row 11: (k2tog, yo, k5). Repeat six times more.
Row 12: Knit even to last stitch. K2tog with first stitch of next row.
Row 13: (yo, k5, k2tog). Repeat six times more. K last stitch.
Row 14: Knit even.

These fourteen rows make up the stitch pattern. Repeat twice more or until desired length to crown. NOTE: I have a rather short-ish head and fine hair, so most hats are too long on me when they're supposed to be fitted. For the hat in the photo I only worked two and a half repeats. But three should be right for normal-sized heads.

Decreases (begin on row 1):
Row 1: (k3, k2tog, yo, k2tog, p3, k2tog, yo, k2tog). Rep three times more.
Row 2: Knit even.
Row 3: (k3, k2tog, yo, k1). Rep six times more.
Row 4: Knit even.
Row 5: (k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k1). Rep six times more.
Row 6: Knit even.
Row 7: (k2, k2tog, yo, k1).
Row 8: Knit even.
Row 9: (k2tog, yo, k2tog). Rep six more times.
Row 10: Knit even.
Row 11: (k3tog, yo). Rep six more times.
Row 12: Knit even.
Row 13: k2tog around.

Cut yarn, leaving a 12" tail. Using tapestry needle, thread yarn through all loops. Pull tight and weave in end on reverse side.
